how it started
Cameron Filepas is a lighting designer based in the New York City area. Born and raised in rural New Jersey, he grew up with a deep love for nature and a fascination with light in all its forms. Anything that glowed, flickered, or shifted in color immediately caught his attention.
He also grew up loving film and theatre, drawn to the way stories could completely change depending on how they were lit. A family tradition of attending McCarter Theatre’s annual production of A Christmas Carol became especially meaningful, and over time it was that show that really sparked his interest in lighting design.
From there, he sought out theatre wherever he could—community productions, school shows, and Broadway—always paying attention to how lighting shaped the world on stage. He loved live performance, and was amazed by theatre technology.
He went on to earn a BFA in Lighting Design from Montclair State University, and began building his career as a lighting designer. Today, he continues to create work that focuses on atmosphere, storytelling, and the emotional power of light.

Cameron focuses on saturated, expressive, and shadow-rich environments. His work leans bold and colorful, while his process remains relaxed and collaborative. He creates atmosphere without overcomplicating the process, maintaining a playful but productive environment.
He is drawn to stories that carry strong emotion and raise important questions. Dramatic themes allow his lighting to be present and amplified—often functioning as a character within the world of the piece. He sees music and lighting as natural complements—both shaping tone and emotion. In his work, lighting often responds directly and immediately to music, reinforcing rhythm, mood, and movement. He is known for his sharp ear and precise timing, with his kinetic lighting embracing and enhancing the musical structure and rhythm.
